Max ready for Spa: 'We've made the most of it'

Published on 27 August 2020 by Stefan Meens

Ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix weekend, Max Verstappen, sporting a special driver cap, previewed the race at the legendary Spa-Francorchamps circuit. “It’s a shame there are no fans this year, because they always create an amazing atmosphere. But it’s great to be here; it’s my favourite track with a lot of fast corners.

With eleven races left on the calendar, Max is second in the standings. Does that mean the Dutchman is a title contender? Max: “Normally speaking no, because you are limited in the number of upgrades we can bring and the races follow each other in quick succession this year. You can bring small updates, but not big ones. But I’m positive and realistic. I don’t believe in fairy tales, but we’ve overachieved. Mercedes is quicker than us, but we’ve made the most of what we can do.”

Max continues: “Of course, we’re not here to be second our third. We want to fight for the championship. But we have to accept we’re currently not in that position. Purely on speeds, we’re not fastest. We need them to have a bad day or bad luck to be able to win. We have a lot of work to do.”

However, Spa-Francochamps has not proved to be Mercedes’ happiest hunting ground in the last few years. Max: “But it also hasn’t been our best track because of our top speed and the long straights. It will be difficult to beat Mercedes. They are very dominant with their car and entire package. Of course, I don’t give up. We’ll give it our all, that’s the mentality of our team. We’ll keep fighting and take every chance we get.”
