Max on Spa: 'The corners are still beautiful'

Published on 28 August 2020 by Stefan Meens

Max Verstappen reflected on his first day of the Belgian Grand Prix with Ziggo Sport’s Olav Mol.

The first thing that stood out for Mol, was Max’ special edition driver cap. “Blue is my favourite colour but there is also a bit of orange, of course”.

On the topic of orange, there will not be the usual 'Orange Army'support for the Dutchman; the COVID-19 pandemic means no spectators are allowed at Spa-Francorchamps. “It’s of course a shame there are no fans, but we all know why. Regardless, we should be happy we can even race here. Also, it’s a beautiful circuit.”

With the regulations making the cars faster than ever, some corners have become flat out, but that does not mean it is necessarily  an easier track. “You always have to keep steering, so you can’t really relax. But even though some corners are now full throthle, the corners are still beautiful.”

On the topic of nice race tracks, the FIA announced the return of the Turkish Grand Prix for the 2020 season. “I’ve never driven there but I drove it a lot on the PlayStation. It’s a beautiful track, so I’m looking forward to racing there”, said Max.

Reflecting on his Friday, Max said: “It was close all of Friday, but I think that is because of Mercedes; they haven’t found the right balance yet. Tomorrow they’ll turn up the engine and they’ll be quick. For us, things went well from lap one. Of course, you can always improve the balance, but generally speaking I’m already pretty happy.”

“The balance wasn’t great on my fastest lap in FP2, but we were still quick which indicates the car is running well, so we can’t complain too much.”

With rain forecast throughout the weekend, Max does not mind a drop or two. “Here in Spa you never know. We’ll see. I hope it rains a bit, that always adds a bit of excitement.”
